What Is Rosacea

Rosacea is a chronic condition characterized by facial redness and sometimes pimples. Rosacea affects all ages and has four subtypes, three affecting the skin and the fourth affecting the eyes- ocular type. Left untreated it worsens over time. Redness and sensitivity typically appears between the ages of 30 and 50 and can affect women more so than men. Fair skin and blue eyed people are also more likely to suffer from the condition. Typically begins as redness on the central face across the cheeks, nose, forehead, but can also affect the neck, chest, ears and scalp. There are various symptoms depending on the severity but the most common are: semi-permanent redness, telangiectasia( dilation of superficial blood vessels on the face), burning, stinging and itching sensations. In some aggravated cases red dome papules (small bumps) and pustules, and a red lobulated nose( rhinophyma).

Triggers that cause episodes of flushing and blushing are directly related to the development and aggravation of the condition, but inflammatory disorders of the facial skin are poorly understood. The causes and triggers of Rosacea vary, the following list are the most known and common: hedetirary ( if a parent or family member suffers from the condition you may be more prone), Sun exposure, stress, anxiety, cold wind, heavy exercise as it increases blood flow, alcohol consumption ( specially red wine), hot baths, spicy food, caffeine, foods high in histamines( red wine, aged cheese, yogurt, beer),the demodex mite ( a parasite that can live in the hair follicule and feeds on sebum, in its presence the skin can be reactive with redness); helicobacter plori bacterium living in the upper colon is thought to be a cause. Certain medications and topical irritants can also trigger Rosacea, some acne and wrinkle treatments such as microdermabrasion, chemical peels, high dosages of tretinoin in anti-aging and acne skin care, steroid creams, are some of the possible triggers. The above listed are not the causes of Rosacea but have been reported to aggravate. Avoiding the major triggers is the best way to control the development of this skin condition. Rosacea is associated with sensitive and dehydrated skins, as the constant inflammation interferes with hydration, the ability to keep moist and it can cause great distress for those who have it. People that have this condition are not suitable to a variety of Aesthetic treatments; anything that is abrasive or interferes with the epidermis will aggravate the condition.

How Laser Works

Treating rosacea varies depending on severity and subtypes. Therapy for the treatment is not curative, and is best measured in terms of reduction in the amount of erythema and inflammatory lesions, decrease in the number, duration and intensity of flares, and concomitant symptoms of itching, burning and tenderness. The two primary modalities of rosacea treatment are topical and oral antibiotic agents, while medications often produce a temporary remission of redness within a few weeks, the redness typically returns shortly after treatment is suspended. Fotona XP Dinamis Laser it is a safe and effective way of treating and controlling the facial redness that cause constant flushing and blushing, by targeting the small dilated blood vessels within the skin. Based on the principle of selective photothermolysis, hemoglobin is the primary target of Nd-Yag laser light, as the energy is absorbed by the blood in the vessel, heat is created, the vessel wall coagulates and is effectively destroyed, a selective thermo-injury, causing the vessel to be absorbed by the bodys natural defence mechanism. Fotonas long pulse Nd:Yag laser penetrate to a depth of a 5-6mm into the skin, allowing for a highly effective treatment.

What To Expect

With a sufficient number of treatments, this method may even eliminate the redness altogether, though additional periodic treatments will likely be necessary to remove newly formed capillaries. A course of 4 treatments every two weeks is the protocol treat the redness (erythema), however the therapist will be able to advise you during the free consultation, as well as the appropriate skin care regime to calm and sooth the skin. Treatment is mildly uncomfortable but there is no need for anesthesia, the cool air system is sufficient to diminish the discomfort caused by the laser beam. Clients that suffer from Rosacea need to be aware that this is a chronic skin condition, therefor Laser treatments work to treat the redness caused by the enlarged superficial capillaries. Reducing as much as possible the triggers is the best way to control this condition.

Other Recommended Treatments

Clients that suffer from Rosacea often have very sensitive skins and are not suitable for other types of treatments, however we do recommend a course of Glycolic acid peels.

Glycolic Acid peels- For stage one and two of rosacea, a combination approach of Mild GA and topical GA products to an antibiotic regimen can dramatically improve the skins condition. These peels have a dual purpose, in they remove excess oil, tighten skin while promoting gentle exfoliation. Also provide maximal benefit for the inflammatory lesions and background photo damage.
